Panj-Amu River Basin Programme successfully completed

The Panj-Amu River Basin Programme in Afghanistan, which ran from 2004 to 2017, has been successfully completed. The programme was funded by the EU and implemented by Landell Mills, in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy and Water, Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock and other government agencies.

A closing meeting was held at the Director General of Water Affairs Management’s office in Kabul in November to formally close the programme. The meeting was attended by Landell Mills’ project executive, Valeria Pini, the team of experts and members of government agencies. Staff were presented with certificates of appreciation at the end of the meeting.

The meeting reviewed the successes of the project, such as experience sharing workshops, development of procedures, guidebooks and the revision of the Water Law. The Director General of Water Affairs Management, acknowledged that the activities had been implemented successfully despite being carried out in insecure locations, and thanked the EU for the funding and Landell Mills for its technical expertise.

The Panj-Amu River Basin Programme developed integrated water resource management in the Panj-Amu river basin. As such, it has been a vehicle for the improvement of rural livelihoods and, consequently, to the overall economic recovery of Afghanistan.
