Brochure: EU Achievements in Food and Nutrition Security and Sustainable Agriculture

On behalf of the European Commission's Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development (DG DEVCO), Landell Mills has conducted an extensive study of the main results achieved by EU-funded interventions in the Food and Nutrition Security and Sustainable Agriculture domain. The main findings are summarised here.

During 2014-2020, the EU has committed more than €8.8 billion to food and nutrition security and sustainable agriculture, corresponding to 20% of the EU development portfolio. The study finds that EU development assistance has helped around 26 million food-insecure people through social transfers or livelihood support, making more communities more resilient to food crises. Most of the support, 60% of the total, is being directed to Africa, followed by Asia (13%).

Landell Mills has also produced a short film which showcases the main achievements. Watch the film to find out more.

The film was shown at the high-level event Food and Agriculture in Times of Crisis, which took place in Brussels in April and highlighted the short and long-term risks associated with food crises, in order to promote a call for action at regional and national levels. The event brought together approximately 400 participants, which included representatives of the European Commission, the United Nations and national governments, members of the Global Network against Food Crises, research agencies and NGOs.

Key speakers at the event included Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the EC; Neven Mimica, European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development; Christos Stylianides, European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management; Phil Hogan, European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development and José Graziano Da Silva, Director-General, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.

The services were provided under the EU-funded service contract Integrated Support Service for Food and Nutrition Security and Sustainable Agriculture (ISS-FANSSA), as implemented by Landell Mills, which started in January 2014 and will run until December 2019. Find out more about ISS-FANSSA here:
