From 14th-16th May 2025, Landell Mills, under the European Union Public Engagement For Investment Project (EU-EPIC) in Tanzania, facilitated a three-day strategic communications training workshop for staff from the Government Communication Unit and the Business Environment Unit at the President’s Office – Planning and Investment (POPI).

The three-day workshop, held in Morogoro, Tanzania, aimed to strengthen internal communication capacity to support the effective implementation and visibility of the Business Environment, Growth, and Innovation (BEGIN) programme, particularly the component related to Blueprint for Regulatory Reforms’ Programme (MKUMBI).

The training was designed to enhance participants’ knowledge and practical skills in strategic communication planning, impactful storytelling, digital content creation and public engagement. These competencies are central to achieving the overarching goal of the communication plan for the BEGIN programme: to enhance public awareness, foster stakeholder engagement and promote transparency around reform initiatives.

Delivered through interactive and hands-on sessions, the training balanced conceptual understanding with applied practice. During the sessions, participants:

  • contributed to revising the communication plan for the BEGIN programme.
  • drafted press releases and success stories.
  • explored a suite of digital tools including Canva, mobile photography, and AI applications such as ChatGPT and DeepL.
Sessions also included peer reviews, live editing and content planning exercises, which encouraged collaborative learning and the immediate application of skills. The workshop concluded with a series of action points and recommendations aimed at institutionalising communication practices within the POPI, including the development of a resource pack, peer review system and regular refresher sessions.

Feedback from participants indicated a marked improvement in confidence and competence in strategic communication and digital engagement. The training served as a critical milestone in building sustainable communication capacity within the POPI, supporting Tanzania’s regulatory reforms and investment promotion efforts.
