How Do Women Win Elections in 2019? A one day seminar in Abuja, Nigeria

In anticipation of the February 2019 general election in Nigeria, Landell Mills worked closely with the European Union Delegation to organise a one day seminar in Abuja to promote women's participation in politics.

Women are severely underrepresented in Nigerian government institutions: of the National Assembly's 469 members, less than 5% are women. The EU has expressed its commitment to closing this gender gap and aims to drive sustainable growth through gender equality initiatives.

The seminar, entitled How Do Women Win Elections in 2019? took place at the Shehu Musa Yar'Adua Centre on the 23rd of March, shortly after International Women's Day. Ketil Karlsen, head of the EU delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, explained that the seminar would celebrate progress in gender equality and women's rights, while pressing for further development in this area.

Throughout the event participants were encouraged to explore ways in which the political selection process could become more inclusive, and foster a more accommodating environment for women in politics. The day primarily concerned the 2019 elections and increasing female representation in the dominant political parties.

Nigerian women continue to endure political, economic and social inequality. This seminar was one of a range of EU initiatives designed to empower women and promote equality.
