Provision of Master Fisherman

Following the development of a successful Java Sea Pelagic Fishery Programme, Landell Mills were requested to provide a Master Fisherman to strengthen the capacity of the fishing industry in Java. His responsibility was to supply training to crews of local fishing vessels on the installation, use and maintenance of new fishing devices. New equipment was brought in on the recommendation of gear and vessel technologists to improve capabilities and enhance the effectiveness of the cruises.

Animal Feeds Development Project

The objective of the project was to improve the availability and quality of livestock products and to improve the efficiency and incomes of producers, and in particular to overcome constraints on the availability and quality of animal feeds as a major factor-limiting livestock production. LM provided a team of consultants to: carry out a study of the animal feeds sector and propose a master plan providing a blueprint for future development and identification of major problems and bottlenecks; provide a set of recommended standard specifications for manufacture of feeds; provide improved feed analysis laboratory facilities and feed formulation systems and improvement of feed quality at minimal cost. The consultant also provided assistance and training in the operation of an animal feed mill in an industry evolving from a production oriented base to a market led industry, and from the state to private sector.

Regional Tuna Development Project

This project ensured the optimal long-term exploitation of the region’s tuna resources to maximize the economic benefit to the recipient member countries of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) in Madagascar, Comores and Seychelles. The project specifically:laid the foundations for the rational development of artisanal and industrial tuna fishing by consolidating the institutional framework established during Phase I. A permanent regional body, The Tuna Association, was set up for the member countries of IOC. provided capacity to analyse data on tuna resources in order to assess them correctly and so manage them efficiently, thus ensuring their optimal long-term exploitation. help member countries co-ordinate their action in the sector by sending specialists in various fields and by supplying hardware for operations of regional interest train those taking part in the project during the execution of the programmes, giving priority to the use of the region’s existing resources.
