Landell Mills has a wealth of experience in developing and implementing communication and visibility strategies for clients including the European Commission, the African Peace Facility, GIZ, FCDO and UNICEF. Examples include developing an innovative campaigns-based multi-annual strategy which underpins a €3.2M contract for the EU Delegation in Cambodia; and designing and implementing the African Peace Facility communications strategy.
We also have experience in strategic capacity building and have facilitated training for international cooperation partners on topics including case study development, photography, and social and traditional media. Effective monitoring and evaluation of the impact of our communications work is foundational to our strategic approach.
We work with excellent writers and designers to develop eye-catching and engaging communications materials for web and print. For example, our work designing the annual EU-ASEAN and EU-Indonesia ‘Blue Books’ included development of a distinct visual identity and accompanying infographics. We also provided support to DG DEVCO in the development of digital style guidelines which brought together the digital communications of EU Delegations globally under one distinct visual identity.
We provide comprehensive filmmaking services covering audio-visual production, editing and animation. Notable examples include co-production of an episode of Ubongo Kids for the EU Delegation to Tanzania, which reached over 1.5 million viewers; a series of success story videos for the EUD to Georgia covering the EU’s support to areas including independent journalism, professional education, job creation and human rights; and a series of human-interest films focused on the impact of the Sudan Food Security Programme on the lives of smallholder farmers, produced for the EUD to Sudan. We also provide photography services, for example producing photos for the EU Delegation to Georgia of the Ambassador's trip to three regions of Georgia, the Skills4Jobs programme launch event, a human rights campaign and an EU alumni reception.
Landell Mills offers event management for bespoke events, with prior examples including:
- The Study in Europe Fair in Nigeria, which attracted over 5,000 attendees in Kano and over 3,000 in Lagos;
- The Bike45Ride in Jakarta, Indonesia, in which 5,857 cyclists participated;
- The 9th edition of the Nigeria-EU Business Forum, which attracted more than 1,600 in person attendees and more than 440 livestream viewers;
- The 11th EU-ASEAN Youth Talk Show, which brought together over 500 participants to discuss the topic of ‘Connecting Youth for Growth’.
This service encompasses facilitation of logistics, including technical audio-visual support, venue sourcing, coordinating press attendance and online event logistics, as well as production and distribution of promotional materials.
Landell Mills has managed media relations across a range of projects for clients including the European Commission and the ASEAN Secretariat. Our services include conducting major media campaigns, organising press conferences, preparing press releases and media monitoring.
Our digital marketing services incorporate social media management, website design, development of marketing campaigns and collaboration with influencers.
Significant examples include developing and implementing the EU Nigeria Global Gateway campaign which used a multiplatform
approach including TV, radio, billboards, digital advertising and social media; and engaging key opinion leaders (KOLs) based on areas of expertise/interest and followers’ persona on our EU ASEAN contract.
Project Examples
Visibility for Addressing Environmental and Climate Change Challenges through Improved Forest Management in Jamaica
The aim of the Visibility for Addressing Environmental and Climate Change Challenges through Improved Forest Management in Jamaica (IFMJ) contract was to highlight the positive impact of EU development assistance for the Jamaican forestry sector.
The key objectives were to increase awareness of the EU, the actions and achievements of the IFMJ, and the partnership between the EU and the Government of Jamaica; and to launch and build awareness of the actions and achievements of the forestry sector and success stories in Jamaica, within communities living in forest-dependent areas. The main activities of the contract were the development of a visibility plan and the implementation of communication activities.
Technical Assistance for the Monitoring, Knowledge Sharing and Visibility of the Regional Programme ECOFAC 6
The ECOFAC 6 (Preserving Biodiversity and Fragile Ecosystems in Central Africa) programme supported sixteen protected areas, including eight priority conservation landscapes. It spanned Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, Gabon, and Sao Tome and Principe. The programme aimed to promote a green economy characterised by locally established economic development in support of climate change mitigation and adaptation. Its focus was more effective protection of the diverse and fragile ecosystems of Central Africa, taking into account sustainable management of ecosystem services.
The regional support implemented by Landell Mills focused on knowledge exchange at the local, national, and regional level. This was achieved through strengthening stakeholders’ knowledge-sharing systems, as well as capitalising on and replicating innovative approaches.
Communication and Visibility for EU Cooperation – ASEAN
Communication and Visibility for EU Cooperation – ASEAN raised public awareness of the benefits of the EU-ASEAN partnership through a range of activities spanning strategic communications, digital marketing, graphic design, film production, and online and offline event management.
Key deliverables included annual production of the EU-ASEAN flagship ‘Blue Book’ and organisation of the publication launch events; organisation of a successful series of online Youth Talk Show events; coordination of Green Diplomacy Week activities across ASEAN member states; organisation of region-wide competitions in photography, creative content and comic strip design, as well as three editions of the Youth Sustainable Project Competition; and design and production of EU-branded visibility materials.
Under this contract, we also supported EU-funded initiatives with their communication needs, including ASEAN Regional Integration Support by the EU (ARISE+), Enhanced Regional EU-ASEAN Dialogue Instrument (E-READI) and Sustainable Use of Peatland and Haze Mitigation in ASEAN (SUPA).
Technical Assistance to Improve EU Visibility in Policy Areas and Development Cooperation, Nigeria
Both phases of this contract have increased and sustained awareness of the role of the EU and its contributions to development in Nigeria. Activities have spanned a range of cross-cutting themes, including education and science, political dialogue, culture, economic diplomacy, and gender.
Activities have included developing and implementing a communication strategy for the North of Nigeria; event management; media relations, radio/TV production; and design and production of promotional materials including exhibition collateral, banners, t-shirts, brochures and newsletters.
Digital marketing has also played a key role in raising EU visibility – we have developed a social media strategy and content calendars; produce regular content for Facebook, X, Instagram, and YouTube; and monitor and report regularly on digital metrics.
Communication and Visibility of EU Cooperation with Cambodia
The Communication and Visibility of EU Cooperation with Cambodia contract focuses on enhancing EU relations, partnership and cooperation with Cambodia.
The project team support the preparation, management and implementation of a long-term communication and visibility strategy. This includes organising events and campaigns, and cultivating dissemination and outreach initiatives to increase audience engagement.
The Here with You campaign, designed and implemented under this contract, aims to build awareness and recognition of the EU partnership in Cambodia. The campaign showcases the EU’s tangible contributions to Cambodia’s development and targets young Cambodians aged 15-28. It is focused on three sectors supported through Global Gateway: sustainability, education and clean water. These three pillars highlight the EU’s role in strengthening Cambodia’s infrastructure, green transition and digital economy.
Strategic Communication and Public Diplomacy for the EU Delegation to Rwanda
Both phases of this contract have an overall objective to increase the visibility of the EU (including its Member States), and to communicate effectively on its partnership with Rwanda and contribution to the county's development progress.
Under this contract, Landell Mills developed and delivered a communication and visibility strategy and 24-month action plan for communication activities. A wide range of events were organised by Landell Mills, such as the European Fair 2022 and 2023, the EU Film Festival 2022 and 2023, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Dance Competition in 2022. Landell Mills managed media relations for events, including booking ads for radio and TV, engagement with influencers, social media promotion, and drafting of press releases. Branded visibility items were produced for many of the events organised under the contract.
Technical Assistance to the EU Delegation for Cooperation in Sudan
Under this contract, Landell Mills is implementing the With the People of Sudan. Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow campaign, which has an objective to enhance the EU's visibility as a capable partner and to reassure the Sudanese people that the EU remains committed to supporting them throughout the current conflict. The target audiences include Sudanese citizens, CSOs and international cooperation partners.
The With the People of Sudan. Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow campaign is data-driven, and an audience insight survey was carried out at the start of the project to establish baselines. KPIs are linked to reach, recall and knowledge, and impact on opinions and actions.
The campaign content strategy focuses on delivering impactful messaging around EU support in Sudan through shareable content in Arabic and English. It prioritises human-centred storytelling across key themes, including education, health, food security and livelihoods, and human rights. Activities span media relations, social media promotion and influencer marketing.
Video Production, Animation Design and Support for DEVCO Online Communication
The project provided DEVCO’s Communication Unit with professional filming and editing, animation, and branding expertise as well as producing animated data visualisations and short animations to explain theoretical issues; developing short videos for social media; and developing detailed brand guidelines, following analysis of DEVCO brand perception.
A range of videos were produced, including staff interviews and a 3-minute video with subtitles in multiple languages, combining footage with animated effects and text. Short videos and animated GIFs were also produced for social media on various topics, including Inequality Day, World Biodiversity Day and Press Freedom Day.
The project also produced a series of templates and style guides for the DEVCO Communication Unit which facilitated a better understanding of brand perception around key brands used for communication purposes, such as European Union, European Commission and EuropeAid, and will inform future decisions on the visual style and use of the brands.
EU4Georgia Phase 2
This contract raised awareness of the EU amongst the Georgian population and cast a spotlight on the benefits of the EU-Georgia partnership, particularly with regards economic development, job creation, environmental protection, human rights and connectivity.
Contract activities encompassed strategic communications, event organisation, media relations, development of communication materials, and monitoring and evaluation to demonstrate impact.
Highlights included the organisation of Europe Day celebrations in Tbilisi, which attracted 15,000 attendees and was opened by the President of Georgia. Landell Mills facilitated promotion in the run-up to the event, and managed event logistics including interactive installations. The event in the capital ran alongside several regional Europe Day celebrations in smaller towns and cities to ensure broad reach.
Information, Communication and Visibility Activities for the EU Delegation to Zambia
Landell Mills worked in partnership with Ku-Atenga Media under this contract to raise awareness amongst the Zambian public of the benefits of the EU-Zambia partnership and enhance the capacity of staff at the EU Delegation to Zambia to communicate effectively.
A detailed communications strategy was the cornerstone of contract activities – this included annual workplans and social media strategies.
Event management included organisation of three large-scale CSO fairs; conceptualisation and logistics for three successful annual EU 5k events with up to 1,000 participating runners per event; communications support to ‘World Clean Up Day’ activities; and organisation of a series of successful EU media breakfasts and briefings.
EU Africa Actions on Peace and Security through the African Peace Facility Communication Plan
Awareness of the African Peace Facility was significantly increased through this contract which encompassed strategic communications, event management, production of communication materials, copywriting, and graphic design. Key audiences for the contract included national, regional, continental and international peace and security institutions; academics and students; CSOs; NGOs; think tanks; journalists; and the public.
Project highlights included organisation of an InfoPoint open conference event, a lab debate event at the European Development Days on African Women in the prevention and resolution of African conflicts, and a workshop in Abuja for Civil Society Organisation representatives from six West African countries on The Right to Peace in West African States.
Communication materials produced under the contract included a documentary film, a promotional brochure, annual reports, factsheets, branded giveaways and digital marketing content.
European Union Cooperation in Central Asia: Visibility Events
This contract aimed to enhance the visibility of the EU in Central Asia. Activities spanned strategic communications, event management, graphic design and copywriting, media relations, and digital marketing. The project team conceptualised and implemented two major media campaigns focused on #EU4HumanRights and #EU4Women; covering four central Asian countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.
Key events included organisation of EU film festivals in Astana and Almaty, attracting 1,500 visitors; management of a Faces of EU Cooperation photo exhibition in Astana; implementation of the high international conference, 25th Anniversary of EU-Central Asia Relations: From the Past to the Future; and a series of EU Mini Model events at universities across four countries in Central Asia.
Visibility of the EU in Tanzania
Landell Mills was chosen by the EU to enhance the visibility of the partnership between the EU and Tanzania, in all its dimensions. The project targeted audiences including Tanzanian and European citizens, civil society, professional associations, university students and academics, EU Member States, and international organisations. Landell Mills focused in particular on youth and students.
Under the contract, Landell Mills produced a range of audio-visual materials, including a film to showcase EU-funded projects in Tanzania, titled Wanawake hai! Empowering Female Farmers in Tanzania, and various short clips for use on social media.
Landell Mills also co-produced an episode of Ubongo Kids titled Kids for A Cleaner Future! / Watoto kwa Nishati Safi!, which educated children about energy efficiency and reached more than 5.1 million families in Africa through animated stories and songs. Other episodes of Ubongo Kids co-produced by Landell Mills centred around gender equality; empowerment; and the fight to end child marriage, teenage pregnancies and gender-based violence (GBV).
Technical Assistance to the Rural Smallholders Component of the Sudan Food Security Programme (SFSP)
The overall aim of the Sudan Food Security Programme (SFSP) was to contribute to improved food security in the Republic of Sudan. The SFSP was divided into two components, with Landell Mills contracted by the EU to support the second component of the programme which aimed to improve the productivity and income of rural smallholders, and therefore their livelihoods.
Landell Mills developed an outline communications strategy for the programme, as well as annual visibility plans with non-governmental organisations (NGOs). All strategic communications activities under the contract complied with EU communication and visibility guidelines.
Under the contract, Landell Mills organised events and training workshops, and produced visibility materials to promote the project such as brochures and documentary films. 20 short films were produced, documenting positive changes in the lives of individual farmers and fishermen who received support from the SFSP.
Creative Strategy for Product Development for Essential Family Practices: Communication for Development Programme
This UNICEF-funded contract focused on developing a creative communications strategy, which disseminated information to positively influence behaviour through innovative communication tools. This project facilitated discussion and learning around UNICEF's Essential Family Practices (EFPs). Highlights included: organising focus group discussions and a multi-stakeholder forum; developing social media campaigns, household and KAP surveys, and film content; and creating a framework methodology for collecting community input, testing tools, disseminating information and monitoring social change related to EFPs.
